Maureen Thorson’s NaPoWriMo prompt: “write a poem based on an image from a dream. We don’t always remember our dreams, but images or ideas from them often stick with us for a very long time. I definitely have some nightmares I haven’t been able to forget, but I’ve also witnessed very lovely things in dreams.” Robert Lee Brewer’s Poem-a-Day prompt: “write a wish poem. The poem could be about making a wish or granting a wish. It could focus on the fallout from a wish granted or denied. Or think up a wishful scene to share in your poem.”
My dad, Martin Gotera 25 years old, probably. That poem was a gift from the poetry gods. Wrote it in about 40 minutes. I was trying to use the word "wish" in it but it never happened, though there are consonantal echoes in "was" and "awash." Okay, moving on. Alan said about his poem today, "I have been studying GMHopkins a great deal lately, and I thought I would attempt a more conventionally religious poem." Jackself In lines 10-11, here's a passage that's very Hopkinsian: "hands, rough-callused, scarred, / And cut." The listing of adjectives tied together by sound, the alliteration of the /k/ sound and the rhyme of /d/ and /t/. And lots more like that in the poem. Very cool, Alan. There you go, friends. Two Petrarchan sonnets. Friends, won’t you comment, please? Love to know what you’re thinking.
