Day 14 ... NaPoWriMo / Poem-a-Day 2019

At NaPoWriMo HQ today, Maureen Thorson suggests watching a video of Taylor Mali’s “The The Impotence of Proofreading,” a very funny poem. Maureen’s prompt “takes its inspiration from Mali’s poem. As he shows us, there are many words in English that sound like other words. For that matter, English has lots of words that look like other words. Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a poem that incorporates homophones, homographs, and homonyms, or otherwise makes productive use of English’s ridiculously complex spelling rules and opportunities for mis-hearings and mis-readings.” Robert Lee Brewer’s Poem-a-Day prompt: “For today’s prompt, pick a state (or province, territory, etc.), make it the title of your poem, and then, write your poem. A few possibilities include New York, California, Ontario, Bavaria, and Champagne. It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway: Feel free to bend this in any direction you wish.” San Francisco A smile sooty with lots of heels, electric straightcars and boozes, smell neighbor woods and distracts. thick fog and moist, dump whether in sum pleases. I didn’t really take the "homophone, homograph, homonym" path but rather played with consonance, replacing words with others that shared the consonants but had different vowels, in an attempt to stretch meaning. I realize now also that I didn't pick a state or province, either, but a city. Oh well, anyway, there you go. Friends, won’t you comment, please? Love to know what you’re thinking.
