Having grown up in America in the 60s, I never thought a person of color could become president of the US during my lifetime. I know it's swiftly becoming a cliché to say that, but it's the truth.
It is
indeed a new day, and I applaud the rising of this new sun.
I remember being a young boy who was proud that I too, simply by being a natural-born US citizen, could become president of our country. I just had to turn thirty-five, I thought.
I didn't have to grow half that old before I realized that this possibility resided only in that "America in the Heart," to borrow a famous phrase from Carlos Bulosan.
Well, yesterday, that possibility was again made real for all young girls and boys. It is possible for all of us to become what we want to be in America . . . with luck, hard work, and perseverance.
Best of luck to you, Barack, in your new job. And best of luck to all of us. Let's all roll up our sleeves and pitch in.
